FUTURISTIC FRIDAY

In light of “Throwback Thursday or #tbt” which involves posting something that has nostalgic value, we at RunTheMill wanted to turn this popular convention on its head. This weekly posting will share a song that is either ahead of its time or attempts to push us out of our comfort sound zone.

Mariachi El Bronx – “Wildfires” & “High Tide”

Going from hardcore punk rock to Mariachi music is difficult to imagine, but the Mariachi El Bronx have done just that. Most known for their punk band The Bronx, vocalist Matt Caughthran and Co. went a whole different direction in April 2007 under an alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. The band experiments with electronic and pop undertones along with the classic rhythmic shuffling of mariachi music. It’s whimsical and daring and is this week’s Futuristic Friday.

Time for T- “Long Day Home”

One of the underlying hopes at RunTheMill is to place the often ephemeral spotlight back onto rising artists, who chose a career that often does not provide monetarily as much as the work involved with producing an album. The new Time for T 6-song album was a product of crowdfunding, in which the small group was able to raise $3,500. The small investment resulted in a little bit of magic. Listen to “Long Day Home.”

Roger Sellers- “Spectrolite” & “Lates”

Hailing from the music town of Austin, Roger Sellers displays all of his talents on his solo album Primitives. He does it all. He is the musician, lyricist, composer, sound engineer and producer on all of these tracks. The length of the songs gives Roger the chance to let each of the instruments expand, breathe and then expand again. Here are two of my favorite songs: “Spectrolite” and “Lates.”

Jordan Klassen- Firing Squad

Jordan Klassen is back. The Vancouver-based musician, released his LP Repentance on Nevado Records almost a year ago. He actually recorded Repentance with producer/Multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Anderson who worked with another RTM favorite Aidan Knight. The easy comparison is to Sufjan Stevens, but his newest single has the indelible hook that could help get him some serious radio play in the near future.

Slumberjack-Body Cry (feat. Father Dude)

Trap has obviously been making its way into mainstream Hip-Hop, but not in the way the Australian duo, Slumberjack seamlessly interweaves it into this sultry R&B song. This is the lead track off their self-titled EP, and while I initially hesitated knowing that Trap is not my go-to genre, the tightness of each timely hit and the overlay of jazz chords sold me on this week’s Futuristic Friday.
